Panelists, residents weigh in on state’s financial crisis during forum at North Central College

AARP The American Association of Retired Persons organized the gathering as part of Enough Is Enough, a campaign the group created in 2016 to inspire voters to question the state’s budget battle, spread information about it, and motivate them to contact their lawmakers, according to Rawle Andrews, regional vice president of AARP. He traveled for the event from his Washington, D.C., office.

“The people of Illinois don’t realize they can have an impact,” explained Ryan Gruenenfelder, director of advocacy and outreach for AARP. “A lot of assembly members say, if I get five calls (about one issue), I need to pay attention. If I get 10 calls, I need to address it.”.

Naperville is the second of 10 planned stops for the town hall campaign, which will criss-cross the state from Chicago to Carbondale, according to Andrews. He said AARP hosted 11 such events in Illinois in 2017.

“Tens of thousands in Illinois heard about the campaign and contacted their elected officials and said, ‘You have to do something.’ That was the first step,” said Andrews. “Citizen advocates made the budget framework happen. Now they have to finish the job.”
