How rising rents and an aging population are changing housing trends in Naperville

City leaders are weighing these factors as they look to ensure city employees, nurses and firefighters who work in Naperville can afford to live there and seniors on fixed incomes can stay. They have come to the forefront as new housing proposals — often high-end — come before the city council for approval.

Naperville, the state’s fourth-largest city and a regional hub for housing, transit and jobs, has been faulted for its lack of affordable housing. The city’s changing population has spurred debate on the issue in recent months, and city leaders’ opinions vary on how Naperville should address housing.

“The (home) owners that are already here may be able to afford it," Naperville community grants coordinator Ruth Broder said. "But there are a lot of people that would not be able to afford even to be able to buy something here.”
