Narcan training proves life-saving in Naperville heroin overdose

"We're very excited, and the fact is they were just issued the Narcan and trained on Tuesday (Jan. 20)," Naperville Police Chief Bob Marshall said Thursday.

Recently implemented by the city department, the Narcan training program is intended to ward off heroin overdose deaths. So far, authorities say, the antidote has saved three dozen lives since DuPage County public safety responders began receiving the required training for its use in November 2013.

Marshall said only about 20 of the department's 168 sworn officers remain to be trained before everyone on the police force has been certified.
